Nice Story on Carol Mayo Jenkins

Filed under: Theatre, CBT'ers, Clarence Brown Theatre — rchoover @ 7:58 pm

Carol Mayo Jenkins (with Tony Cedeno) in Love's Labour's Lost One of the great things about working here at the Clarence Brown Theatre is being able to get to know some very talented people.  Some of those are guest artists.  Some are students on their way up.  And some are those who have chosen this as the place where they practice their vocation.

For example, there is Clarence Brown Theatre Company Member Carol Mayo Jenkins.  I’ll confess that a few years ago, when I heard that someone of that name was coming here to perform, I thought that the name sounded familiar, but I couldn’t quite place it.  Then someone mentioned Fame, and of course I instantly knew who it was.  Fortunately, Carol has stayed with us to perform and to teach, and to let us know who she really  is.  What a wonderful resource to have here!

The website Real Live Theater has just published a story entitled Carol Mayo Jenkins: creating a life beyond the footlights that illustrates Carol’s life journey through theatre.  It’s highly recommended reading.

Thanks for sharing your life with us, Carol Mayo Jenkins!

Rabbit Hole at CBT Lab Theatre

Filed under: Theatre, Clarence Brown Theatre, Lab Shows — rchoover @ 10:17 am

Rabbit Hole, the 2007 Pulitzer Prize winning drama by David Lindsay-Abaire, will run in the Clarence Brown Lab Theater July 22 through August 2, 2009.

It is presented by DuckEars Theatre Company.

Directed by Mace Archer, the show is about a couple, Becca and Howie, who are trying to find how best to grieve and move on after a shattering accident kills their 4-year-old son.

“In working on this amazing play with this amazing group of people, I have had the opportunity to once again face the cruel prank of life, which is the simple fact that it must end. Sometimes it’s expected, and sometimes it catches us unaware, as in Rabbit Hole. Regardless, the vacuum created by the loss of those we love always threatens to trap us. The characters in this play strive to pull away from the vortex, and try to evade this dimension of loss. Their efforts are a testament to we who survive and to those of us who remember the dead,”  Archer said.

The production features Tony Cedeno as Howie, Nancy Duckles as Becca, Rebecca Haden as Izzy, Mark Jennings as Jason, and Carol Mayo Jenkins as Nat.  Also Amy Loyd’s wonderful son Zane makes his debut as the voice of Danny.

The cost for tickets are $15 for adults, $8 for students/seniors and $5 for the Wednesday, July 22 Preview performance.  Tickets may be purchased at the door the night of the performance. No advance sales or reservations are required.

The show dates and times are:

New UT Statue or Bust

Filed under: Roger's Musings, University of Tennessee, Clarence Brown Theatre — rchoover @ 10:23 pm

As I gaze out my office window I see, fittingly, lovely orange plastic temporary fencing separating a small construction area on the Joe Johnson and John Ward Pedestrian Mall on the campus of the University of Tennesssee.  (A portion of it is even nicely framed by the now empty show poster holder on the plaza outside the Clarence Brown Theatre…)

New Statue Preparation 1Rumor has it that a statue of some sort is to be erected there, at the center focal point of the Pedestrian Mall (or where the ”A&A” leg of the Mall joins the “Andy Holt Avenue” portion of the Mall to make a “Power T”).  A circle of paving stones has been removed to provide for the statuary base, possibly with a rumored circle of flowers, to break up the monotony of the straight Andy Holt Avenue leg and make it less convenient for walkers.

Actually, in addition to the circle, there is a little rectangular “key” that juts out from the circle, oriented roughly to the East (to spark conspiracy theories), or perhaps aimed at the McClung Tower, Humanities Building, or, probably, toward Neyland Stadium.

As I understand the “metal” statue has been completed, and I did not sit for it, someone else must have been honored.  Not sure if it is Dr. Johnson or John Ward, or if it’s perhaps Dolly Parton, Layla Kiffin, Manny Ramirez, Oprah, or Nick Bonacker, or perhaps another?  Do you know???  I have heard that the statue was donated, so it’s All Good.

The place is buzzing with anticipation.
