Nice Story on Carol Mayo Jenkins

Filed under: Theatre, CBT'ers, Clarence Brown Theatre — rchoover @ 7:58 pm

Carol Mayo Jenkins (with Tony Cedeno) in Love's Labour's Lost One of the great things about working here at the Clarence Brown Theatre is being able to get to know some very talented people.  Some of those are guest artists.  Some are students on their way up.  And some are those who have chosen this as the place where they practice their vocation.

For example, there is Clarence Brown Theatre Company Member Carol Mayo Jenkins.  I’ll confess that a few years ago, when I heard that someone of that name was coming here to perform, I thought that the name sounded familiar, but I couldn’t quite place it.  Then someone mentioned Fame, and of course I instantly knew who it was.  Fortunately, Carol has stayed with us to perform and to teach, and to let us know who she really  is.  What a wonderful resource to have here!

The website Real Live Theater has just published a story entitled Carol Mayo Jenkins: creating a life beyond the footlights that illustrates Carol’s life journey through theatre.  It’s highly recommended reading.

Thanks for sharing your life with us, Carol Mayo Jenkins!

R.I.P. Sam Brown

Filed under: Roger's Musings, Knoxville — rchoover @ 6:56 pm

I was shocked to hear today of the death of Sam Brown.

Many people in the Knoxville area remember Sam as a television anchorman, for many years on WATE-TV Channel 6 and then on WKXT (now WVLT) Channel 8.  (He worked in a couple of larger markets for several years before returning here.)  In recent years he was a lecturer in the UT College of Communications and was the Vice-President for North American operations of KnowledgeSource.

Sam took the anchor chair at Channel 6 while I was finishing my degree in broadcasting at UT, before I started working at several area radio stations.  As a young person just entering that field, it was exciting to see another young person making his mark.  Sam helped change the way news was covered in the Knoxville market.  Some anchors in this area before him were basically news “readers”, but he helped develop the concept of true broadcast journalism here.  He won four national Edward R. Murrow Awards.  I soon left the area, but occasionally saw him at UT football games.

A few years ago, I saw him at my office — both of us having some recognition that we’d met before, but not really remembering how (we both had had dark hair back in the 70s — but now we both sported the salt-and-pepper look).  We had a nice talk about the old days of broadcast news in Knoxville.  I was glad to hear he was doing some teaching, but was sorry that he was no longer on the air.  He did that so well.

We’ll miss Sam Brown — he was a class act.

The Miracle Theater Seeks Multiple Talents for Multiple Shows

Pigeon Forge, Tenn., August 3, 2009 — The Miracle Theater in Pigeon Forge, Tenn., one of the largest faith-based theaters in the country, will be holding auditions Sunday August 30 and Monday, August 31 for performers for three different inspirational shows planned for the 2010 season.

Singers, actors and dancers are needed for the three hit musicals which include the return of The Miracle Show, that portrays the life and miracles of Jesus Christ; the return of Exalt, a Christian music experience; and the Miracle Theater debut of the classic musical Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, that retells the biblical story of Joseph in a slapstick style.

Interested people must come prepared per the instructions at www.miracletheater.com. People are asked to call 865-428-7469, ex. 3450 to reserve an audition time.

“We are looking for people to fill many different roles in three very different productions,” said Robert Kalina, general manager of the Miracle Theater.  “Some of our roles are just acting and some are heavy singing and dancing roles. We are searching for male and female leads for Joseph as well as a Pharaoh/Elvis,” Kalina said.

“Both The Miracle Show  and Joseph  are Broadway-style musicals with costuming, lighting and special effects to rival anything in New York,” Kalina said.  “The Miracle is a serious and emotional production while Joseph is whimsical, fun, upbeat and comical.”

Far beyond a passion play, The Miracle  is a musical retelling of the life of Christ blending a soaring original score, thought-provoking lyrics and beautiful arrangements of inspirational familiar songs of faith. An emphasis is placed on the epic struggle between forces of good and evil, and an underlying theme of spiritual warfare provides an added dramatic dimension.

The Exalt Show  is a unique high-energy production that features a live band. The show highlights favorite Christian music including Timeless Hymns, Southern Gospel favorites, Contemporary Christian hits from the ’70s, ’80s and ’90s and today’s best-loved Worship Music!

The Mission of the Miracle Theater is to present faith-based family entertainment through live theatrical productions revealing the person of Jesus Christ as the Living Word of God.  The Miracle Theater is locally owned and operated by David Fee and Jim Hedrick. The theater is part of the Fee/Hedrick Family Entertainment Group. Other theaters in the Fee/Hedrick Family Entertainment Group include The Comedy Barn, The Black Bear Jamboree and Magic Beyond Belief.
